Thank you for standing up for women’s sports.
New England Women’s Solidarity strongly supports the recent statements by U.S. Representatives Seth Moulton (D-MA) and Tom Suozzi (D-NY) regarding the unfairness of male athletes competing in female sports, and we thank them for their courage in standing up for the rights of women and girls.
Shortly after Kamala Harris lost her bid for the US presidency, Moulton told the New York Times: “Democrats spend way too much time trying not to offend anyone rather than being brutally honest about the challenges many Americans face. I have two little girls, I don’t want them getting run over on a playing field by a male or formerly male athlete, but as a Democrat I’m supposed to be afraid to say that.”
Suozzi was also quoted in the Times, stating that biological males should not be allowed to participate in female sports.
At NEWS, we know that women and girls need our own sports for fairness and safety. Males are faster and stronger than females due to anatomical differences such as greater muscle mass, denser bones, larger hearts and lungs, and narrower pelvises that cause their femurs to slant less and put less resistance on their knees. Multiple studies have proven that cross-sex hormones cannot reverse such advantages. We want everyone to feel welcome to participate in athletic pursuits, but since sports are played with bodies and not identities, it’s only fair that everyone compete against their own biological sex.
We believe that issues like women’s right to our own sports and our own spaces (such as locker rooms, women’s prisons and crisis shelters) strongly resonated with voters in the 2024 election, and will continue to do so in the years ahead. We encourage more Democrats to recognize that ALL of the rights of women and girls are important to the voting public.
